Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual
holiday in fourteen states of the United States. Celebrated on June 19, it
commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. The
holiday originated in Galveston, Texas; for more than a century, the state
of Texas was the primary home of Juneteenth celebrations.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes
education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month
marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings.
Having worked on a Juneteenth special edition for the Oklahoma Eagle
Newspaper in 2002, Toydrum collaborated with Universal Creative Group in
2003 to create a press kit and promotional concepts for a community
publication for Juneteenth.
